Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 0.25 miles W of Rt. 234 on low ridge just SE of Bald Hill.
Rock Types Present: Minor siltstone debris.
The vegetation of this plot contrasts sharply with that of the nearby MNBP008, which is located on a diabase substrate. The reddish sols weathered from siltstone on this part of the ridge are evidently leached and infertile, encouraging an abundance of deciduous ericads (Gaylussacia baccata and Vaccinium spp.) in the lower strata of the dry, Quercus alba-dominated forest. Species richness is relatively low and Carya spp., while common, are confined to the understory. This site has been continuously forested, though disturbed by cutting, since before the Civil War until the present.
